What to pack for Medellín? Climate and essentials

What to pack for Medellín? Climate and essentials

Medellín's climate is a great ally for travelers. With temperatures averaging between 22°C and 26°C throughout the year, you can save yourself the hassle of packing winter clothes or excess baggage. However, there are variables to consider: you are in a mountain city (1,500 meters above sea level), which means intense tropical sun and unexpected rain.

For Hotel Sloh guests who value minimalism and lightness (the Sloh philosophy), this guide will help you pack smart.

1. Clothing: The Layering Rule

The key in Medellín is to dress in layers. Be prepared for the morning sun and the coolness of the evening.

•   Daytime Clothing (Base): Cool, breathable fabrics (cotton, linen). T-shirts, light blouses, and light shorts/pants are perfect.

•   The Key Layer (Sunset): A light jacket (coat or hoodie) or cardigan is essential for evenings. Although El Poblado is temperate, terraces and restaurants can be cool.

•         The Mountain Layer: If you plan to visit eastern Antioquia (Guatapé, Rionegro, La Ceja) or Arví Park, temperatures drop significantly (57°F - 68°F). You will need a warmer coat (a denim jacket or a light padded jacket).

2. Footwear: Prioritize Comfort

You'll be doing a lot of walking, whether exploring the Manila neighborhood, climbing the hills of Comuna 13, or touring nearby towns.

•   Closed Shoes (Essential): Comfortable sneakers or light hiking shoes are a must for tours and urban walks.

•         Casual Sandals: A pair of sandals or flip-flops are useful for relaxing at the hotel, going to the pool (if the hotel has one), or taking a shower.

3. Protection Essentials

Medellín is in the equatorial zone, and the sun is intense even on cloudy days.

1. Sunscreen (SPF 30+): The high altitude sun is strong. Apply it daily to your face and arms.

2. Foldable Umbrella or Poncho: Rain showers come quickly and leave just as quickly. A compact umbrella is your best friend.

3. Sunglasses and Hat: UV protection for your eyes and face during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.).

4. Insect Repellent: Useful if you plan to visit rural areas, natural parks, or the Melcocho River (see Article #57).

4. Technology and Connectivity (Digital Nomads)

If you are coming from North America or Europe, you will need at least one adapter.

• Plug/Adapter: Colombia uses Type A and Type B plugs (the same as in the United States and Canada) with two or three flat pins. The voltage is 110V/60Hz. If you are coming from Europe (220V), you will need an adapter and, potentially, a voltage converter for high-powered devices.

• Portable Charger (Power Bank): Essential for long days of sightseeing and to keep your phone charged (GPS drains the battery).

• Translation/Transportation App: Download the Uber/Didi and Google Translate/Deepl apps before leaving your hotel.

Sloh: Pack Less, Live More

The Sloh concept is synonymous with efficiency and minimalism. We invite you to bring only the essentials, knowing that you have a comfortable base of operations with services.

• Laundry Service: For long-stay guests or those traveling light, Hotel Sloh offers laundry service, eliminating the need to pack clothes for 15 or 30 days.

• Location: The Manila neighborhood has convenience stores and pharmacies nearby where you can buy any essentials you may have forgotten (sunscreen, insect repellent, etc.).
